What is the Sustainable Business Program?
   

The Sustainable Business program recognizes and promotes businesses and government operations that pledge to go above and beyond compliance with environmental regulations to prevent pollution and conserve resources.

  How do you get started?
    Review the checklist that corresponds with your industry regarding: resource conservation, waste reduction, and pollution prevention measures. Then, feel free to call the Sustainable Business Coordinator at (916) 649-0225 for more information or to arrange for a site visit, and begin working on completing your online checklist.
 

Why should your operation become certified as a Sustainable Business?
 
  • Participation in the Sustainable Business program is free
  • Once certified, your business or operation will receive free advertising and promotion through the program
  • You will receive a Sustainable Business decal for your front door or window identifying your operation as a Sustainable Business and a Sustainable Business logo to use in your advertising
  • Saving energy, water and other resources will save your operation money. Generating less trash and hazardous waste saves money, too
  • Involvement in the program will help you develop a positive, proactive relationship with local environmental compliance agencies
  • Your company’s community image will be enhanced through Sustainable Business certification
  • Your employees will enjoy a safer workplace and will have one more reason to take pride in working for you
  • The Sustainable Business Program offers you free, convenient, timesaving environmental compliance assistance

Do you get credit for the good things you're already doing?

    Yes! In fact, your business or operation may already qualify for certain measures or categories! The program standards are designed to apply to most businesses, but if certain measures are not applicable or feasible for your facility and operations, you may request an exemption or demonstrate alternative measures.
  What do you have to do to become a Sustainable Business?
   

To be recognized as a Sustainable Business you must :

  • Observe environmental laws and regulations
  • Adopt resource conservation and pollution prevention measures customized for your business
  • Allow us to verify the measures you've adopted
  • Pledge to continue these efforts
  • Encourage management and employee participation in the program
  • Inform your customers about your business' environmental efforts
  • Help spread the Sustainable Business message to other businesses
 

How long is the certification valid?

   

Sustainable Business Certification is valid for as long as your business would like to participate in the program. Although, there will be various random site visits that will be conducted by program staff to ensure that your business complies with the measures that you have selected.
 

Is there a fee to be certified as a Sustainable Business?

   

No! Sustainable Business certification and marketing by the program on your behalf is free!
